God never puts us in a place where we have to pick one of His commands to keep at the expense of breaking another. For example, it is simply bad theology (not to mention bad policy) to say that we have to somehow pick between the preservation of human life and the pursuit of gainful employment. Listen to the wise words of some Christian fathers:
“What is required in the sixth commandment? “The sixth commandment requireth all lawful endeavors to preserve our own life, and the life of others.” (Westminster Shorter Catechism 68)
“What is required in the eighth commandment? The eighth commandment requireth the lawful procuring and furthering the wealth and outward estate of ourselves and others.” (WSC 74)
The application of these concepts is complicated during a pandemic. But the solution is surely not to pretend that we keep the sixth by breaking the eighth.
